Expats, travellers, and people buying and selling in Australia all face the same issue: an Australian number is required and they don't have one yet. A local Australian number is what gets you through signup on most Australian websites. Here's some examples of websites that people use one for:
Gumtree Australia
Gumtree Australia is a website to buy, sell, trade or give away goods, much like eBay. To join the Gumtree Australian version you have to confirm an Australian mobile number, and phone numbers from other countries or landlines aren't accepted. This is where most people get frustrated when trying to buy from Australian websites. Once you've verified your phone number, you can search, message sellers and sign up to a delivery forwarding service so your purchases reach you wherever you are.
Facebook Marketplace and eBay Australia
The other two big websites Aussies buy and sell are Facebook Marketplace and eBay Australia. On both platforms, sellers must perform SMS verification once your listings are ready to sell, so having an Australian number makes your account more trustworthy and authentic to eBay.
Guzman y Gomez
Guzman y Gomez (GYG) is an Australian Mexican fast-food chain which has a loyalty programme named GOMEX. Members earn points and redeem rewards on orders made through the app. To register you first need to confirm an Australian number by SMS, and new members are often given a sign-up reward as an incentive for verifying. Why Do Australian Sites Want an Australian Phone Number?

How to Get an Australian Phone Number on SMSPool

What If I Need to Verify Again Later?
