Yandex SMS Verification

Yandex requires SMS verification when you sign up for a Yandex ID, after you enter your name and create a password. You can't skip the SMS step, but you don't have to use your personal number. This guide covers what Yandex is, why your code might not arrive, how to fix it, and how to verify with one of our numbers.

Get a number for Yandex

What is Yandex?

Yandex was founded in 1997 and is a Russian alternative to Google. It offers a full ecosystem, including Yandex Mail, Yandex Disk (cloud storage), Yandex Maps, Yandex Browser, Yandex Taxi and Yandex Music, all tied to your Yandex account. Yandex is dominant in Russia and the CIS countries.

Why Yandex asks for a phone number

Yandex requires a phone number on sign up to prevent bot accounts, and it also uses it for extra security and account recovery. Since December 2022, phone linking became mandatory for new and even some existing accounts, and some existing accounts were blocked for not doing so.

Why your Yandex verification code might not be sending

  • The phone number is from an unsupported country.
  • VoIP or virtual phone numbers are blocked.
  • The number was entered incorrectly (format or country code).
  • A spam filter moved the message to your spam folder.
  • Too many resend attempts triggered a rate limit.
  • You're signing up outside Russia without a suitable country number.

How to fix Yandex SMS code not sending

  • Use a non-VoIP, high-quality number. We recommend a UK number with a UK IP address.
  • Check the number format (digits, country code, no spaces).
  • Check your spam or filtered messages folder.
  • Request the SMS once, wait, and don't spam resend.
  • Order a fresh number if it keeps failing.

How to verify Yandex with a temporary number

Here is how to get verified in a few minutes:

Step 1: Create an SMSPool account. Go to SMSPool.net. Registration is fast and does not even require an email address if you would rather not use one.

Step 2: Add funds to your balance. Go to the Deposit page and add credit to your account. Yandex verifications are low cost, so we would suggest adding $3 to get started.

Step 3: Order a number for Yandex. Go to the Order page. Choose a UK phone number, since UK numbers work best for Yandex (see below), then search for and select Yandex as the service. If you want to test it first without spending anything, the free Yandex SMS page lets you do that.

Step 4: Complete the purchase. Click the Quick Purchase button. SMSPool will generate a real, non-VoIP number for you within seconds.

Step 5: Verify your Yandex account. Enter the number on the Yandex signup screen and request the code. When it lands in your SMSPool dashboard, copy it and enter it on Yandex before it expires.

Yandex error after entering the SMS code

Sometimes Yandex sends the verification code successfully to your number, but shows "An error occurred. Please try again later" when you accept the terms and finish creating the account.

This can happen after the SMS verification, so receiving the code does not always mean the signup will be approved.

Try these fixes:

  • Use a fresh mobile number rather than a reused or low-quality virtual number.
  • Match the phone number country to the country your connection is in.
  • Try a UK phone number and a UK IP address rather than the USA.
  • Use a residential connection instead of a VPN, proxy, or datacentre IP for the highest success rate.
  • Do not create accounts repeatedly on the same browser session. Wait, clear cookies, or use a new browser profile.
  • Make sure your account details, browser locale, IP region, and phone country do not create an obvious mismatch.
  • If the error continues, contact Yandex Support.

According to our test registrations, several US numbers on separate US residential IPs received the SMS code but failed at the final terms screen. A UK number used with a UK residential IP completed registration on the first try. This is why we recommend a UK number and UK IP address for Yandex registration.

Temporary number or a rental for Yandex?

If the account is of utmost importance, we would suggest our long-term rentals, which ensure you keep access to the number for as long as you renew it. Our temporary numbers, while a great and affordable option, do not last forever, hence the price. Our USA temporary numbers can last up to 3 to 5 days, but our UK temporary numbers typically do not last longer than 24 hours. This could be an issue if Yandex asks for an SMS again, as you could lose access to your account.

FAQ

Does Yandex require a phone number to sign up? Yes, Yandex requires a phone number to sign up.

Does Yandex accept VoIP numbers? No, Yandex does not allow VoIP numbers. We would recommend using SMSPool for Yandex SMS registration.

Can I register on Yandex without my personal number? Yes, you can use one of our non-VoIP phone numbers instead.

Why is my Yandex verification code not sending? Usually a VoIP number, a number from an unsupported country, the number entered incorrectly, spam filtering, or too many resend attempts.

Do I need a Russian number for Yandex? No, you can use numbers such as UK, Kazakhstan, and many others.

Will Yandex ask for the number again after signup? It depends. If the activity on your account looks unauthorised, or you change any security settings, then it could. This is why we offer long-term rental numbers, so you keep access to the phone number.

Is it safe to give Yandex my real phone number? It depends on how much you value your privacy. It's good to minimise data collection where possible, so you could opt for an SMSPool number instead if you do not wish to give Yandex your personal number.

Can I use one number for more than one Yandex account? No, you can only have one Yandex account per phone number.
