How to Get an Australian Phone Number
- By SMSPool Admin
- Guides
You can get an Australian mobile number ( 61) online with SMSPool, without a SIM card and without being in the country. Many Australian sites, such as Gumtree Australia, require a local 61 number to sign up and will reject international numbers and landline numbers. As a non-resident you won't easily get a genuine Australian SIM card, and you'd have to be in Australia to do it, so a virtual number is the practical way in.

What Do People Use Australian Phone Numbers For?
Expats, travellers, and people buying and selling in Australia all face the same issue: an Australian number is required and they don't have one yet. A local Australian number is what gets you through signup on most Australian websites. Here's some examples of websites that people use one for:
Gumtree Australia
Gumtree Australia is a website to buy, sell, trade or give away goods, much like eBay. To join the Gumtree Australian version you have to confirm an Australian mobile number, and phone numbers from other countries or landlines aren't accepted. This is where most people get frustrated when trying to buy from Australian websites. Once you've verified your phone number, you can search, message sellers and sign up to a delivery forwarding service so your purchases reach you wherever you are.
Facebook Marketplace and eBay Australia
The other two big websites Aussies buy and sell are Facebook Marketplace and eBay Australia. On both platforms, sellers must perform SMS verification once your listings are ready to sell, so having an Australian number makes your account more trustworthy and authentic to eBay.
Guzman y Gomez
Guzman y Gomez (GYG) is an Australian Mexican fast-food chain which has a loyalty programme named GOMEX. Members earn points and redeem rewards on orders made through the app. To register you first need to confirm an Australian number by SMS, and new members are often given a sign-up reward as an incentive for verifying. If you don't have an Australian number but want to use the app and its loyalty perks, you can register with an Australian 61 number from SMSPool.
Australian services and everyday apps
An Australian number can also be necessary for local delivery, transport and loyalty apps, plus promos and signups exclusive to Australia. Most of these are built for the Australian domestic market, so they either refuse or ignore a foreign mobile number.
A note on our Australian numbers
Our Australian numbers are Semi-VoIP which means they are virtual numbers, and they're labelled "(Virtual)" next to AU on the order page. They work on most services, including Gumtree Australia and nearly all the apps that require an Australian number. A very small number of extremely strict sites only allow signup with a carrier-issued SIM, so for those a virtual number may not work. For almost all signups, it works just fine.
Why Do Australian Sites Want an Australian Phone Number?
SMS verification is mainly how Australian companies check that a user is a genuine local person rather than a spammer or bot farm. It also reflects local telecoms rules set by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), which have tightened SMS sender and anti-scam requirements in recent years. Gumtree Australia is one example, it doesn't give you the option of entering a foreign number.
Even where an overseas number might technically be accepted, delivery isn't always guaranteed and the code may never reach you. An Australian number avoids all of those problems, and it appears local, which is what these services prefer.
Why Is It Hard To Get an Australian SIM Card?
For a non-resident, getting a real Australian SIM card is almost impossible. Most Australian mobile operators require you to be in Australia to activate the SIM card, and you'll also need ID and a local address to complete the process. Those conditions effectively stop anyone from getting an Australian SIM card before they arrive in the country.
The next option most travellers try is a travel eSIM, and it's usually where they realise they're stuck. Many eSIMs are internet only, so you can browse the web but you won't get an Australian number that can receive an SMS.
SMSPool handles all of that. We let you get an Australian number online, from anywhere in the world, that works on most services. Please note that we do not allow financial services, government websites and telecom providers to be verified.
How to Get an Australian Phone Number on SMSPool
Step 1: Create an SMSPool account. Go to SMSPool.net. Registration is fast and does not even require an email address if you would rather not use one.
Step 2: Add funds to your balance. Go to the Deposit page and add credit using card or crypto. Australian verifications are low cost, so we would suggest adding $3 to get started.
Step 3: Order an Australian number. Go to the Order page, select Australia (Virtual) as the country, then search for and select the service you want to register on. If you want to test it first without spending anything, the free SMS page lets you do that. In our screenshots we have selected GuzManyGomez as that's what we wish to verify.
Step 4: Complete the purchase. Click the Quick Purchase button. SMSPool will generate an Australian number for you within seconds.

Step 5: Verify your account. Enter the number on the site's signup screen and request the code. When it arrives in your SMSPool dashboard, copy it and enter it on the site before it expires.
What If I Need to Verify Again Later?
Australian numbers from SMSPool are single-use, for one verification. After verification, the number is no longer active and can't receive a second code.
For a one-off signup, that's fine, you verify once and you're good to go. But if it's a service that will text you again for logins, password resets or security checks, just remember you won't be able to receive those on a used temporary number.
Luckily we offer long-term rentals Australian (Virtual) numbers, ensuring you can maintain access to the phone number for up to 30 days at a time if you continue to renew.
