What Services Are Not Allowed on SMSPool?
- By SMSPool Admin
- SMSPool
SMSPool numbers can't be used for financial services, telecom providers, government websites, identity verification services, Discord or Roblox. The rule covers every number type, including one-time numbers and long-term rentals, and the Not Listed option won't work for them either. Everything else on our order page is fair game, and we support over 1,200 services.
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Financial services | Banks, crypto exchanges, PayPal and other payment apps, money transfer apps, loan and credit providers |
| Telecom providers | Mobile networks and carriers like EE, Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile |
| Government websites | GOV.UK, HMRC, the IRS, tax and benefits portals |
| Identity verification | ID and age check providers (KYC services) |
| Discord and Roblox | Both platforms are not allowed |
We built SMSPool to keep your personal number private, and that hasn't changed. This list is short on purpose - it mainly covers services that carry legal risks, plus a few places where a number that isn't in your name could put your account or your money at risk. For everything else, we're here to keep your real number out of it.
Financial Services
Services which deal with money - banks, crypto exchanges, PayPal and similar payment services, money transfer services and anyone providing loans or credit - are off limits. Know Your Customer and anti-money laundering laws require these companies to know who their customers are. A number you don't own won't pass muster, and these companies are frequent targets for fraud.
But there's another, more obvious, reason to avoid using our numbers for them. Your bank and payment accounts are among the most important accounts you have. If the number linked to them stops working, you could find yourself unable to access your own money.
This applies to long-term rentals just as much as to one-time numbers - even if you keep a rental for months, it's not a number in your name. If you need to give a number to a bank, crypto exchange or other financial institution, use your own SIM. Everywhere else, our numbers will protect your existing number.
Mobile Networks and Telecoms Providers
You can't use our numbers to register for or verify an account with a mobile network - EE, Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile to name but a few.
Government Sites
Sites run by government authorities - GOV.UK, HMRC, the IRS and similar services for tax, benefits and other public services in any country - are off limits. They hold very sensitive information about you - tax and benefit details, the information needed to get or renew a driving licence, and details for immigration applications, to name but a few. Losing access to these accounts should be avoided at all costs.
Many of these sites send verification codes to confirm your identity, and may do so months or even years down the line. Regaining access can involve long delays and a lot of effort. This applies in every country - wherever you are, if an account is run by a government or public body, use your own phone number for it.
Identity Verification Services
Sites which provide identity verification - checking your age, carrying out KYC (Know Your Customer) checks and similar processes - aren't supported. As you'd expect, they rely on linking an account to a real person, and a temporary or rented number works against that.
You may be asked for extra information while signing up somewhere, for example to scan your ID or take a selfie. If that step asks for a phone number, give your own. However, if the platform itself is supported, you can still use one of our numbers to verify your account - it's only the separate identity check that's restricted.
Discord and Roblox
SMSPool no longer offers numbers for Discord or Roblox. Both were removed at the request of the companies themselves, and you won't be able to order them from the order page. The Not Listed option won't work for them either - it's intended for services we haven't added yet, not for ones we've removed, and codes for these services won't be delivered to our numbers.
Many SMSPool users used our numbers for both services, so if you need a number for either, you'll need to use your own. If either service becomes available again, we'll announce it on our blog and social media. In the meantime, our support team can't provide numbers for these services, but they're always happy to help with anything else.
Why Do We Restrict Some Services?
We like to support as wide a range of services as possible, and don't restrict numbers without good reason. There are four reasons we do:
- Legal - as a registered company in the Netherlands, we need to be careful about the services we support, as some carry legal obligations we won't help anyone avoid
- Fraud - financial, government and identity services are common targets for fraud, and keeping our numbers off them protects everyone
- Number quality - problems on one service can affect delivery on others, so restricting numbers keeps success rates high
- Your accounts - important accounts (e.g. banking, tax) should be controlled by you, and losing access to them is far worse than failing to sign up for a service
In the case of Discord and Roblox, the decision to remove numbers was made by the companies themselves.
Using Our Numbers on Restricted Services
Restricted services aren't listed, so you won't be able to order numbers for them. Using a number bought for another service on a restricted one breaches our Terms of Service, and is unlikely to work, as codes may not be delivered.
The Not Listed option won't work for restricted services either, as it's only for services we haven't added to the order page yet. If you're unsure whether a service is restricted, speak to our support team, who can tell you whether it's OK to buy a number for it.
What You Can Use SMSPool For
Pretty much everything else. We provide numbers for over 1,200 services, including messaging apps, social media, dating sites, marketplaces, food delivery and many email providers.
How do I get a number?
You can buy a one-time number for a single verification. If you'll need to log in to an account with a number regularly, get a long-term rental instead. These stay allocated to you, so you can get more codes when you need them (e.g. for resetting passwords).
Our numbers are real (non-VoIP) unless they're marked as Virtual, so they should work on sites which don't allow virtual numbers. To check whether we support the service you need, see our list of supported countries and services. If it's not there, you can use the Not Listed option, or get in touch with support and we'll consider adding it.
Further Questions
Does this apply to long-term rentals?
Yes - the same restrictions apply to one-time numbers and long-term rentals.
Does this apply to the API?
Yes - the restrictions apply however you order: the site, our apps, the browser extension or the API.
Is PayPal OK?
No - it counts as a financial service, along with banks, crypto exchanges and other payment services.
Can I use a number for a crypto exchange?
No - crypto exchanges have to verify their users before letting them trade, so they count as a financial service.
Can I use a number for a mobile network account (e.g. EE, Vodafone, O2)?
No - use your own number for these.
Can I use Not Listed for Discord, Roblox or other restricted services?
No - Not Listed won't work for any of the services on this page.
Will Discord and Roblox be added back?
Not at the moment, as they were removed at their request. If this changes, we'll let you know on our blog and social media.
Why can't I rent a number for a bank, even if I'll keep it for months?
Banks need to link the number to you, and if it ever becomes unavailable, you could be locked out of your account.
My service isn't listed. Can I still order a number for it?
Yes, as long as it isn't on this page - use the Not Listed option, or get in touch with support and we'll look at adding it where we can.
Where can I find the full rules?
In our Terms of Service. Our support team is also happy to answer any questions.
